HELPFUL HINTS
Send your picture with your first letters.  It is only fair that your Filipina pen pals can see your picture, so you will start off
on an even playing field.  A picture also brings more meaning to the whole pen pal relationship.  I think stronger bonds
are built when there is a face to the words being written.  I will tell you what I did to get a response from Melinda.  It
definitely had nothing to do with my looks.  At the time she was receiving a lot of letters from men in the United States. The
reason Melinda wrote me back, and most of my other Filipina penpals as well, was because of the effort I put into my first
letters.  I talked a lot about my life, and why I was looking for a Filipina pen pal.  I included some pictures of myself and
where I lived, a cassette tape, some newspaper articles, a paperback book about my city, and a few other little things that
I thought were nice.  I also enclosed a couple dollars to pay for their postage to write me back.  My effort made Melinda
realize I was sincere, and the rest is history. Melinda was the first of many Filipinas that I traded letters with. Something
just clicked at some point, and I knew it was time to go see her. When I saw Melinda at the airport in Manila for the first
time, my gut told me that a Philippine woman was going to be my future Filipina bride. As fate would have it, I did marry
Melinda in Tacloban City on December 8, 1998. Unfortunately, there was a nine month delay before Melinda came here
from the Philippines. But after ten years of failed relationships, waiting nine months to be with my Filipina soul mate was
easy.  I know now that writing a Filipino was a very positive life changing experience for me!

Here is what I would strongly discourage you from doing unless you do not want a response from your Filipina pen pals.
Do not send a letter two paragraphs long that has no substance.  Melinda was often surprised about how little effort some
penpals put in to writing her.  Go light on the sarcasm for a while.  Sarcastic humor can be misunderstood by people that
have English as a second language. Even though English is taught from an early age in the Philippines, some things are
lost in the translation.  Also, English fluency varies greatly from person to person in the Philippines.  Also, don't brag
about how much money you have or what you own. Your Filipina pen pals will probably be turned off by this.  Being
humble and respectful will get you a lot further than bragging.

No matter how good things are moving along between you and your Filipina pen pals, bringing up explicit sexual matters
in your letters is a very very bad idea.  You will probably never get a response back from your Filipina penpals.  Also, I
would write your Filipina pen pals a couple times before you call them.  Your first call will be awkward, but it will be a lot
easier if you have shared a few letters.  Be honest.  If you are divorced and have children, you should already know if that
is a problem based on the Filipina pen pal's biographical information. If you are fifty years old and writing to a twenty five
year old penpal, be honest about your age.  I think it is safe to say that reasonable age differences are not problem for
most Filipina pen pals.  If you are eighty years old, maybe writing to a nineteen year old Filipina is not such a hot idea.

Finally, if you go to the Philippines to meet your Filipina pen pal, or pen pals, do not expect to sleep in your hotel room
with any of them.  For most women, regardless of what planet they come from, that would be seen as an insult.  However,
if you end up getting married then disregard the part about sharing a room.
